Wii: What's in a Name?

Nintendo announced yesterday of the Revolution's official name. It is Wii. But let me point out a few things before I go further.
Revolution was a code name, as Project Dream was a code name for Nintendo 64. Dolphin was a code name for Gamecube. The
other thing is that this is not a joke. This is 100% official. Nintendo themselves reported it, and if you are in any doubt, just go
here:
revolution.nintendo.com. Nintendo wouldn't say it on their own site if it wasn't true. This is reality, guys.
But how do we accept reality, when we haven't really discovered what reality is? Slowly,
now.........................................The.....................................new......................Nintendo............................console.............................is...................called.............................W..........................W.....W..................Wii.    .
.........     . .    ....  . .       .
"Why Wii?" is what many, many people are asking right now. Let's examine this very closely. Okay, this sounds like a science
experiment now. Seriously, though, I've said the name to countless people today and yesterday, and everyone thought about it for
about two seconds and said "It's bad." or "Huh?" or "Why Wii?" Unfortunately, I don't have the answers to all those
questions/statments except for two: "It's bad" and "Why Wii?"
Most people think it is bad. And I begin to ask why they think it is bad? They say it is unconventional. But then I ask if they
think the controller is unconventional. All of them agree that the controller is certainly our of the ordinary, even if they don't
agree that it is good. Somehow, the same principle isn't being applied to the name. That is wrong?
I'd like to ask, since when does a name make or break a console? Wii certainly isn't hurting the console name from a marketing
standpoint. The name is so different that even the buzz it has caused in just two days is unbelievable, and I don't think that will
change soon. The name Wii truly is recognized by all markets. Even in everyday speech, there are so many ways to use Wii.
Every time I think of anything doing with the sound of Wii, as in "we", I think of this console. I didn't quite have that same
feeling with the name Revolution. Revolution is already a word, it's already something used. Wii one of few names for consoles
that is completely made up. It doesn't stand for anything, that means no preconceived notions. Wii is only marketing itself, and
that is the point.
Do we all like it? No; very few people seem to adamantly like the name. But it's only been said for two days. Even if you don't like
it, it's quite obvious that it is popular. When I say popular, I am not giving that word any connotation. It could be good or bad. It
has simply created so much hype for itself; that's all I mean by popular. So that should answer "Why Wii?" Because it works.
Judging a book by its cover is exactly what people are doing. It's okay not to like the name just because of the name, but to not
buy the console because of not liking name is stupid. I can think about everything Wii will do. The controller. The Virtual
Console. The games. These things make up what Wii is, and Wii will certainly be a hit.
